At the head of the Big Sur River, steep canyon walls descend to a deep green pool, the Big Sur Gorge. Large chunks of eroded rock from the surrounding cliffs together with cobbles carried into this pool have filled up some areas to create shallower pools. The geology is very colorful around the Gorge with many patterns of included rock.
